The Kelvingrove Museum is the most visited museum in the UK outside London. Restored recently to the tune of almost £28million, it houses more than 200,000 objects including a Spitfire plane, Salvador Dali’s painting of ‘Christ of St John’ on the Cross and an enviable collection of armour and artefacts and it won’t cost you anything! Glasgow’s fine museums and galleries are free and certainly worth a look. We’d recommend the Gallery of Modern Art in Royal Exchange Square and the People’s Palace at Glasgow Green which charts the city’s social history.

For a great view of the city seek out The Lighthouse at Mitchell Lane and climb the spiral staircase of the Mackintosh Tower.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh is arguably Scotland’s most famous architect, artist and designer. You can go on a trail tour taking in all his best work, including the Willow Tearooms (on Buchanan St) and Glasgow Art School. Details from the tourist office. Mackintosh also designed some of the monuments in Glasgow’s Necropolis on Castle St, towards the east end of the city. Based on Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris this graveyard has some great views and some wild deer that have made this place their own.

Next door is Glasgow Cathedral which has certainly proved a hit with football fans in the past – the Sevilla and Espanyol fans who were here for the UEFA Cup Final in 2007 took advantage of the fantastic free tours on offer.

If you’re interested in seeing Celtic Park or Ibrox, home to Celtic and Rangers, then there are tours available. Check club websites www.celticfc.net or www.rangers.co.uk or call Celtic Park: 0141 551 4308 or Ibrox: 0871 702 1972. The Scottish Football Museum at Hampden Park gives you the background to Scotland’s footballing heritage, including a look at the trophy room, Hall of Fame and recreations of our most famous moments. Knowledgeable tour guides will show you the changing rooms, warm-up area and take you out of the tunnel to the sound of the famous Hampden Roar. The museum and shop will be closed on the day of the match. Visit www.scottishfootballmuseum.org.uk for more info.
