The solitary goal came with penalties looming as substitutes Fernando Torres and Cesc Fabregas combined to play in Iniesta and the little Barcelona midfielder drove emphatically across Maarten Stekelenburg and into the far corner. Your trip wouldn’t be complete without trying some haggis. It’s best with neeps and tatties (turnips and potatoes). You could also sample some salmon, and some game. Scotland has some of the world’s best venison and pheasant on offer to fill you up. The traditional Scottish drink is whisky and there are hundreds of variations to try. As for beer Tennents Lager is brewed in the city and is the name you’ll see on many beer pumps. Lager is sold in two sizes – pint or half pint. Off Sales and supermar

Hampden Park is at least a 50-minute walk from the city centre so please leave plenty of time to get there for kick-off. There are regular buses which would normally take around 15 minutes to drop you off close to the stadium, but on match day traffic will be very heavy and it will take much longer. Numbers 5 from St Enoch’s Centre, 75 from Argyle St and the 31 and 37 from Stockwell St, will take you there. Buy your ticket from the driver. It will take you around 10 minutes in a taxi, but the roads on match days can be very congested so give yourself plenty of time to reach the stadium before kick-off. By train you can travel from Glasgow Central Station to either Mount Florida or Kings Park. Mount Florida station is only five minut

The Kelvingrove Museum is the most visited museum in the UK outside London. Restored recently to the tune of almost £28million, it houses more than 200,000 objects including a Spitfire plane, Salvador Dali’s painting of ‘Christ of St John’ on the Cross and an enviable collection of armour and artefacts and it won’t cost you anything! Glasgow’s fine museums and galleries are free and certainly worth a look. We’d recommend the Gallery of Modern Art in Royal Exchange Square and the People’s Palace at Glasgow Green which charts the city’s social history. For a great view of the city seek out The Lighthouse at Mitchell Lane and climb the spiral staircase of the Mackintosh Tower. Charles Ren

Hampden Park - History of "The Hampden Roar" Hampden Park, Glasgow Renfrewshire Scotland
Published: 6th July 2010
The crowd who came to see football matches at Hampden were renowned for creating the Hampden Roar. The noise created was said to terrify opposing teams who came to play there. With capacity at the ground exceeding 100,000 from the early 1900s until the 1980s, the Roar could be heard several miles away from the stadium. In recent times the roar has said to be more muted, due to the modern capacity of the stadium being reduced. It is speculated that the Hampden roar originated during the annual fixture against England in 1929, when Scotland, having played the whole of the second half with ten players, owing to an injury to Alex Jackson, equalised in the final minute with a goal scored by Alec Cheyne (Who played for Aberdeen FC at the time) d
