Hibs news in brief

Published: 26th June 2010

Anthony Stokes

Reports suggest Celtic may be lining up a bid for Hibs 21 goal striker Anthony Stokes.

Stokes only arrived in Edinburgh last season after a frustrating spell in the North East with Sunderland and despite lacking match fitness for a lengthy period still managed to finish the season as top scorer at Easter Road.

Newly appointed Celts boss Neil Lennon is said to be an admirer although the quoted offer of £1 million is likely to need trebled before Hibs are tempted to do business should the story have legs.

Edwin de Graaf

The Dutch midfielder was officially announced as a new signing last week and manager John Hughes is delighted at capturing the former NAC Breda Captain.

'He brings experience and a will to win to the club and I'm delighted to get him in,' said the Hibees gaffer

'He had plenty of offers. Offers to stay in Holland, he had an offer from America and also from an English Championship club.

'But he has decided to come here - he liked what he saw and liked the city.

'He will certainly bring a lot to the table and I'm looking forward to working with him.'

De Graaf was convinced he had to sign for Hibs following the 6-6 draw with Motherwell at Fir Park in May which he believed was a terrific advert for the game in Scotland.

He was delighted to join and said 'It was not a hard decision. When I spoke to the manager and the chairman, I immediately had a good feeling, I knew right away I wanted to play for Hibs.'

Sol Bamba

Big Sol has dismissed rumours a recurrance of a knee injury will keep him out of the final Ivory Coast World Cup clash against North Korea.

Bamba has declared himself fit and is hoping to make his debut in the competition following The Elephant's disappointing performances thus far.

'I started to feel my knee a few days ago and had been out of training but I feel good now. I'm fit to play if the manager needs me' the player said.

Mixu Paatelainen

The former Hibs boss was confirmed as Jimmy Calderwood's successor as manager of Kilmarnock.

Paatelainen fought off competition from Gus McPherson and John Robertson to land the top job at Rugby Park and despite working with a tight budget is delighted to be back in the game.

Alex Miller

Another former Hibs boss, Alex Miller, has also returned to management.

60 year old Miller has been appointed manager of Swedish cracks AIK Stockholm and he will face the prospect of Champions League football with his new charges.

SPL fixtures announced

Hibs start the season with a trip to Motherwell, scene of their 12 goal thriller last month, before entertaining current Champions Rangers at Easter Road.

The highlight of the calendar sees the New Year Derby played at Tynecastle.

Blackpool friendly confirmed

Hibees will face Premiership new boys Blackpool in their final pre-season friendly on Sunday August 8th at Bloomfield Road.

The match is guaranteed to see a large travelling support head to the seaside town for the weekend and comes only two days after Hibs complete their Europa Cup qualifying tie against an as yet unknown opponent.

Darren McCormack

Released Hibs defender Darren McCormack has signed for First Division Ross County following his departure from Easter Road.

McCormack has penned a one year deal with the surprise Scottish Cup finalists as he seeks to get his career back on field after discipline problems on and off the park hindered his Hibs career.

Ross Campbell

Former Hibs striker Ross Campbell has signed a part time deal with Second Division outfit Dumbarton following his release from Dunfermline.

The player made his debut under Tony Mowbray but failed to score in 13 senior appearances for the club.
