  • Glastonbury 2010 - Diary - Friday Worthy Lane, Shepton Mallet Somerset England

    Published: 24th June 2011

Friday… People think Glastonbury is all about sitting in the chillax field, propped up against a teepee shooting the breeze with a couple of ld grizzled hippies. Well let us tell you – we’ve never been so busy in our lives. We arrived on Thursday morning and the haystack that was the festival contained the needles that were our passes to get us in. Like the trials of Hercules or summat we went from the Red Car Park to pedestrian gate C battling heat and dust with only cans of cider to slake our thirst – it was 10.30am after all. Like some cold war spy thriller we had a contact, and we had to meet him for the exchange of passes to take place. Trouble was, Bez was our contact, and as most people know he&rsq

    Published: 27th June 2010

GLASTONBURY: THE FACTS AND FIGURES BEHIND THE WORLD'S BIGGEST MUSIC FESTIVAL       WHEN a few hundred hippies gathered in a field near Glastonbury in 1970 no one could have envisaged that they were witnessing the birth of the world’s largest open-air music festival. It was the day after Jimi hendrix died and the £1 admission cost included milk from the nearby dairy farm. Organisers unwittingly enlisted the local hell’s Angels chapter to handle security but they are said to have made off with the ox roast. Although memories of that first Glastonbury are now hazy it is widely accepted that a Bristol rock band called Stackridge has the distinction of being the first to perform at this no

  • FLORENCE HAS TEARFUL GLASTONBURY TRIUMPH. Worthy Lane, Shepton Mallet Somerset England

    Published: 27th June 2010

Florence has tearful Glastonbury triumph. Florence and the Machine singer Florence Welch choked backed tears as she thanked fans for their support during an emotion-charged set at the U.K.'s Glastonbury Festival on Friday, June 25. The British band first performed at the event in a tiny tent in 2007, and have returned each year since, playing higher on the bill each time. And during their biggest show to date, on the 2010 festival's opening day, frontwoman Welch was overcome by emotion several times during the band's set. She even stopped the group during a rousing rendition of their hit "Dog Days Are Over", visibly fighting back tears as she told the crowd, "This is a pretty big moment for me. To start in a tent and then be here..

    Published: 25th June 2010

Glastonbury review 2010     The end of June means that the emperor of all festivals is back for another 1000-acre weekend of insanity for the 177,500 of us who managed to get hold of a ticket. As ever the build-up to this year's event attracted a lot of debate over the headliners - well, one headliner in particular. For when Irish rockers U2 were announced to be preparing for their first ever appearance at Worthy Farm, a collective sneer travelled around the internet, with a power that forced any Bono admirers into the closet and slammed the door. However, with Bono's joints not being what they used to be, the band pul

Glastonbury 2009: The (unofficial) facts and stats. At the press conference on the Thursday the festival began, it was announced Michael Eavis had retired. A short film was then played of Eavis on the farm. He then appeared for a brief moment, saying he wouldn't be doing a speech this year. Always keep the press wanting more - that's what we like.Meanwhile, the backstage bar was doing a steady trade, despite a free hospitality erection about 20 metres away which was (sadly) only open for an hour or so on Thursday evening. The festival guide recommended bringing £25 a day to cover buying drinks and food. This amounts to £4.4 million spent across the site by the approximately 177,000 visitors. The Green Fields are the soul of Glastonbury Festival, where traditional skills and new ways of thinking combine in an explosion of creativity. They occupy the highest ground at the top end of the site, overlooking the rest of the Festival and keeping watch over its basic principles. This enchanting area still encapsulates the spirit and ideals which inspired the very first Pilton festivals. With its skyline filled with peace flags, gently turning wind generators and the outlines of dozens of tipis, this is a place to discover that there are other ways to make the world turn round other than competing and consuming. The Green Fields are about change and discovery - learning how to release your own potential, and discovering how to change t

  • GLASTONBURY SURVIVAL GUIDE. Worthy Lane, Shepton Mallet Somerset England

    Published: 20th June 2010

The aim of the game is to travel light enough that you can carry you bag for 40 mins, but well enough to cater for all conditions.   1) Wellies. (Better/cheaper to buy in advance.) Please note. Wellies are fantastic for hair removal. You will lose any hair on your calves. If you wanna get the huge fishing style ones that come up to your waste, you will be laughing if we have bad mud. If we have very little mud, you might wish you had something smaller. 2) Trainers. You can’t wear wellies solid. You will need something comfortable to walk in for the dry times. 3) Bring sandals if you want, but these are not a replacement for trainers. 4) Waterproof jacket with hood. 5) If possible, get your hands on a plasti

Beside it, the face of a willowy hippy chick with flowers in her hair conveys an even greater sense of what Glastonbury was and 40 years later the spirit it somehow retains. Somewhere along the way this vast countercultural Brigadoon that assembles and dismantles itself annually became a national treasure, with all the good an

The best of Glastonbury moments   Exhilarating: Damon Albarn playing with Blur Festival-goers and performers - from Damon Albarn to Nick Cave - remember the highlights of Glastonburys past Damon Albarn on playing with Blur, 1992 I broke my foot on stage. I ran into a speaker, 'cause I was quite energetic in those days. And I did it so fast and hard that it toppled over and caught my leg and fractured bones in my foot. And then I went on for the encore. It was very exhilarating and quite painful, which probably sums up the Glastonbury experience. Ronnie Vannucci Jr of the Killers on Paul McCartney, 2004 My first Glastonbury wasn't that enjoyable, as I was ill. But Paul McCartney was so impressive: it felt

  • GLASTONBURY - THE BEGINNING. Worthy Lane, Shepton Mallet Somerset England

    Published: 20th June 2010

Pilton Pop Festival' 1970   In the summer of 1969 a modestly sized music festival was held in the centre of Bath. Just two small makeshift stages and 12,000 visitors. In 1970 it relocated to the Bath & Wells showground just three miles from Michael Eavis' Worthy Farm.   Eavis and his girlfriend Jean snuck through a hedge at the showground and would see an event that - unlike the previous year - was both vast and technologically advanced.   Some 150,000 visitors filled the showground area, with a fittingly large main stage, and as a festival first: video projections allowing tens of thousands of festival goers to see acts such as Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd close up. Perhaps not surprisingly, Eavis - a keen music l
