Tottenham Court Road is benefiting from major transport investment, including a new Crossrail station and a rebuilt Tube station.
A public plaza outside Centre Point is also being created and a number of projects are being planned to provide a more pleasant local environment - with wider pavements, better cycling facilities and improvements to bus services.
This scale of investment, unseen for decades, will dramatically improve one of the most congested parts of the transport network.
It will also bring benefits to local residents and businesses, and encourage further investment in the area.
Tube Station
Improving and upgrading stations is a key part of ourtransformation of the Tube. At Tottenham Court Road this means major work to increase capacity.
Work has already begun and the station will be fully upgraded by 2016 - in time to meet the estimated demand of more than 200,000 journeys per day once Crossrail is built.
Cross Rail
Crossrail will be a modern, high-frequency railway running from Maidenhead and Heathrow in the west to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east.
Tottenham Court Road station will be a key point on the Crossrail route as it runs through central London. Twenty-four trains an hour in each direction will pass through the station during peak periods, providing much needed additional capacity.
Progress
Work to prepare the main site is progressing to schedule and construction of the upgraded Tube station will start in early 2010. Preparation work has also begun around Dean Street for the western ticket hall - which will serve both Crossrail and the Central line. The diversion of utility services such as water, gas and electricity also continues.
