Tottenham Court Road is a road in Central London, England, in a Muggle area. It is relatively close to Charing Cross Road, and thus not far from the Leaky Cauldron and the wizarding street Diagon Alley. The area across which the road is built is described in the Domesday Book as belonging to the Dean and Chapter of St Paul's Cathedral. In the time of Henry III (1216 – 1272) a manor house slightly north-west of what is now the corner of Tottenham Court Road and Oxford Street belonged to one William de Tottenhall. In about the 15th century, the area was known variously as Totten, Totham, or Totting Hall. After changing hands several times, the manor was leased for 99 years to Queen Elizabeth, when it came popularly to be called Tottenham Court. Tottenham Court Road is one of the most popular roads in London, this first became very popular and well known when Queen Elizabeth leased a house in the 15th century. The property was known as Tottenham Court. Shortly after the second world war the road became very well know for selling world war electrical equipment. Proops Brothers and Z & I Aero Services were two of the earliest shops that were established along the road. Since then many stores have opened, particularly electronic stores such as, Micro Anvika which opened in 1984 and soon became one of the top retailers in the UK.
