Queen's 18ft Robe of State goes on display

The Queen’s Robe of State will go on public display for the first time as part of an exhibition at the summer opening of Buckingham Palace.

The crimson velvet robe worn by the Queen at the State Opening of Parliament will be the centrepiece of the display, alongside the Mace and Great Sword of State.

The robe, which weighs more than 15lb, was made for the Queen’s coronation in 1953. It consists of an ermine cape and a long velvet train, measuring 18ft in total.

A pink gown designed by Angela Kelly, which the Queen wore to meet Barack Obama last year, and 10 of her Royal Ascot hats will also be on show.

The exhibition runs from July 27 until October 1.
