One of a Kind Installation The Mall, London Middlesex England
One of a Kind Installation
Published: 29th June 2010
An installation to highlight and test accessibility at the Duke of York Steps by Matthew Lloyd Architects working with Architecture Inside Out, Shape and RIBA London with the support of the Royal Engineers, Capital Models, Price and Myers, Max Fordham Engineers.
One of its kind, this installation is a prototype for a zero-energy lift. It uses water weights to counter-balance a lift cart, with renewable energy sources pumping water back to refill the system- ready for use once more.
The proposal highlights the issue of inclusive design and puts it at centre stage at one of the city's most historic site.
London's public realm will require further investigation in order to address access issues over the next 20 years and beyond- this is a provocation for some fresh thinking.
