History
The Orchestra was established in 1983 and run on an informal basis until 1986 when a group of parents became involved in raising funds to support the Orchestra.
We are now financially self supporting, operating as a partnership between Musical Directors and Parents for the purpose of furthering the musical talents of young people between the ages of 7 and 18 attending schools and colleges within Surrey Heath and the surrounding areas. In January 2004 we entered into partnership with Surrey County Arts West to further the performing arts within Surrey. Eligibility for joining either the Senior, Intermediate or Junior Section of the Orchestra is decided after an audition with the appropriate Musical Director.
There are currently four Musical Directors - Mark Cardy, Paul Harris, Ian Morrish and Jane Hopper. The Musical Directors are assisted by Musical Tutors, Anthony Timmins, Natalie Harris, Judy Freeman, John Martin and Melanie Groundsell.
We have recently begun a new brass inititaive for young players to learn a brass instrument under the guidance of Jeremy Morrish.
We give a number of concerts throughout the year, the most important of these being our May Concerts at Camberley Theatre in Camberley and our Christmas Concert at High Cross Church also in Camberley.
As well as giving concerts locally the Orchestra has performed all over Europe and North America. In the summer of 2008 travelling to the Italian Riviera, to perform five concerts in this beautiful part of Italy.
The 'Friends' Committee support Orchestra activities such as taking rehearsal attendance registers and manning the C.Y.W.O. Tuck Shop.
When any Section of the Orchestra is on the move extra support is vital to maintain the care, safety and enjoyment of all Orchestra Members.
The 'Friends' also encourage additional help from Orchestra Member Parents -essential at Concert and Playout times.
We believe C.Y.W.O. provides young people with a marvellous opportunity to create music with a large group of young players, make new friends and have fun!
We are pleased to announce that as of 1st January 2004 the Orchestra is 'in partnership' with Surrey County Arts West. This agreement will strengthen the Orchestra in many ways including providing continuity of standard of Musical Directors, recruitment of new members through SCAW music tutors and the opportunity for members to benefit from the assisted purchase scheme for instruments.
