Anderson shines as Pakistan have their backsides handed to them

Published: 2nd August 2010

A lack of experience in the Pakistani lineup to English conditions became obvious this week. At Trent Bridge, James Anderson took 11-71 in both innings and England won by a mammoth 354 runs.

During England's first innings Collingwood (82) and Morgan (130) combined for a watchful 219 run partnership for the sixth wicket. Following day one it looked liked England would pe posting a massive total, but the fall of 6 wickets for just 17 runs pegged them back to 354.

The England bowlers seemed to be revelling in the conditions. Movement off the pitch did for most of an inexperienced Pakistan side - Gul took the airbourne route for his 65 (off 46 balls) and a more circumspect 38 from Shoaib Malik spared the visitors having to bat again.

Still, Strauss and Cook walked out to bat with a massive lead of 172, but once again the upper order struggled. Pietersen's lack of form continues, a scratchy 22 means his worries must be mounting before the Ashes this winter. It was from another slightly unheralded sources that the runs flowed - Matt Prior's second Test hundred and able lower order support from Swann and Broad took England to 262/9. Pakistanis reached stumps on day three chasing down 435 and three wickets down already - a fourth day victory seemed assured.

And what an emphatic victory it was! After a slow start, Anderson proceeded to spin the ball all over the place. He took his second five wicket haul of the match (his fourth in Nottingham) as Pakistan were skittled out for just 80.
