  • ..and on to Brisbane.. St Johns Wood Road, London Middlesex England

    Published: 22nd September 2010

Davis? good with the blade aswell as the cue? Its been a mixed international Summer and thankfully its nearly over. With all the crises and countless ODIs in front of half deserted grounds it hasnt been the most edifying season. The Pakistani cricket team seems to be disintegrating in front of our eyes (like the country doesnt have enough to think about right now). So anything but a comfortable England victory in the last ODI would be unusual. The player I feel for most of all in this situation is the young Pakistan fast bowler Mohammed Aamer. Being incriminated in the match fixing scandal of last month may have effectively snuffed out the career of a talent to match Wasim and Waquar of years past. What would any impressionable teen d

  • 2nd Test: Another spanking by England St Johns Wood Road, London Middlesex England

    Published: 10th August 2010

4-0 Anybody? Normally I am cautious man. However after ANOTHER heavy defeat by England - it seems the Pakistanis have little to offer in this series. From an England perspective nearly all cylinders seem to be firing well. Alistair Cook remains a concern but even Pietersen has finally got his eye in. His 80 (for 4!?) was nervy and very fortunate, but hopefully will give him confidence with the Australians waiting this winter. Has he done enough to make the plane? Boycott certainly thinks he hasnt! Expect a big score in the next two tests otherwise he may be spending the winter in a colder climate than he'd want! The bowlers seem to be performing well. 20 year old Steve Finn seems to be causing all sorts of problems - but then

  • Anderson shines as Pakistan have their backsides handed to them St Johns Wood Road, London Middlesex England

    Published: 2nd August 2010

A lack of experience in the Pakistani lineup to English conditions became obvious this week. At Trent Bridge, James Anderson took 11-71 in both innings and England won by a mammoth 354 runs. During England's first innings Collingwood (82) and Morgan (130) combined for a watchful 219 run partnership for the sixth wicket. Following day one it looked liked England would pe posting a massive total, but the fall of 6 wickets for just 17 runs pegged them back to 354. The England bowlers seemed to be revelling in the conditions. Movement off the pitch did for most of an inexperienced Pakistan side - Gul took the airbourne route for his 65 (off 46 balls) and a more circumspect 38 from Shoaib Malik spared the visitors having to bat a

  • Tendulkar's FIFTH double Test Hundred (??!) St Johns Wood Road, London Middlesex England

    Published: 30th July 2010

This guy is a machine. Sachin Tendulkar stands alongside Michael Schumacher for me as one most dominant figures in modern team sport. I remember this guy as a fresh faced teenager scoring 119* against the England quicks in 1990 - the second youngest Test centurion ever. Wisden hailed it as "an innings of immense character". He's been around for two decades and holds almost every single batting record that's out there. In the recent drawn Test Match versus Sri Lanka at Columbo the Master Blaster scored 203, bettered only by Sangakkara who made 217. Nonetheless he is head and shoulders above his peers on the basis of sheer longevity. Being only 37 Tendulkar has several more years of top flight cricket should he remain fit - s

  • Afridi resignation hints at dressing room chaos. St Johns Wood Road, London Middlesex England

    Published: 20th July 2010

Lots of fire and passion in the Pakistani dressing room, just like always. The latest news is captain Afridi's resignation following 'mental pressures' and a 150 run hammering at Lords by the visiting Aussies. He explained "he did the wrong thing" returning to the team and the captaincy, the all-rounder returns to the shortened forms of the game and Salman Butt takes over as skipper. An incredibly talented team self destructs once more. Afridi's tenure lasted just one match and the result was horrible. What price massive team disruption again? After a Test whitewashing in Australia where players were handed out life bands like sweeties, a certain amount of stability was needed. But despite the claims of the team being 'united'

  • 'Derek Pringle was bigger than I remember..' St Johns Wood Road, London Middlesex England

    Published: 19th July 2010

In the 1980s he was a regular fixture in Test and ODI squads for England over a nine year international career. My memories were of a slim young man who chunked out a little in later years. He always seemed to be striding out to bat after an England middle order collapse. Taking guard to Malcolm Marshall with what might as well have been a hockey stick for all the good it wouldve done. He was part of the generation of England cricketers like Graham Dilley. They looked liked ordinary guys, not like the clean cut young dudes who populate the team today. I often wondered what he looked like in real life and one time I was working on the Upper Mound stand I found out. As was finishing everyone was scurrying back to their seats. And there

  • " I don't need a pass, son..." St Johns Wood Road, London Middlesex England

    Published: 19th July 2010

A couple of years back I was lucky enough to get a job at Lords. Being paid to watch a bit of cricket, about as good as it gets, right? I worked up with the gods, in the Upper Mound Stand. Best views in the ground, amongst all the well-heeled members enjoying jugs of Pimms and Wolf Blass wine. Of course, being the best place in the ground to be, there was no end of people trying the luck getting up to the top. Our job was to keep the riff raff out: no pass, no entry.   One time I was on the second level of the stand, looking down to see a gent in a linen suit and matching hat striding purposefully up. My view of his face was obscured. I call down, asking "Excuse Me, Sir... do you have a pass?". He looked up and said "I

  • 3rd ODI - England dish out a spanking St Johns Wood Road, London Middlesex England

    Published: 13th July 2010

Typically our boys are on the receiving end of this sort of thing. With the sting of a first defeat against the Tigers, England struck back in fine style. Strauss's men crushed Bangladesh by 144 runs at Edgbaston to take the series 2-1. Kieswetter's continued his poor run of form, out without scoring in the first over. Captain Strauss and Jonathan Trott then put on 250 at better than a run a ball for the second wicket. This was the highest ever partnership in ODIs for any England wicket - Trott scored his first hundred in this form of cricket, 110 off 121 balls with 12 fours. It was Strauss who really took the Bangladeshi trundlers to the cleaners. The opener must've taken the defeat in the last ODI personally as his steady style be

  • 2nd ODI: So thats ANOTHER England team that believes it's own hype then! St Johns Wood Road, London Middlesex England

    Published: 10th July 2010

So after 3 wins over Australia we're world beaters again then?! Complacency returns in the second ODI at Bristol. Where England lost for the first time ever against Bangladesh(??!). The Tigers have only been at the top table for a decade and have had some sucesses, notably in an ODI victory against Australia in 2005. Against England they hadn't won in 20 outings, and after posting 236-7 on a batting wicket, it looked like the sequence would continue. However, wickets fell at regular intervals to peg England back in their run chase. England middle order offered token resistance when slumping to 166-7 with just ten overs to go. With everything to prove after a recent lapse in form, Trott then upped the ante in raising the run rat

  • 1st ODI: England vs Bangladesh - Bell on song as England win by 5 wickets St Johns Wood Road, London Middlesex England

    Published: 9th July 2010

Once again Ian Bell gets his eye in as England win straightforwardly at Trent Bridge. Bangladesh won the toss and opted to bat first, and much was expected from Tamin Iqbal who flayed the English attack with finesse in the previous series. The 21 year old got off to his customary flying start, dispatching the lacklustre Anderson for consecutive boundaries at the start of the innings. Disappointingly for the neutrals he was out lbw to a straight one from Broad after making a swashbuckling 28. The usual Tigers collapse following Tamim's dismissal didnt occur. Steady half centuries from Siddique and Raqibul ensured Bangladesh reached a satisfying 250-9 in their 50 overs. The wickets were shared around, but once again concerns must be f

  • India A vs England Lions: A... tie!!?? St Johns Wood Road, London Middlesex England

    Published: 7th July 2010

When a team posts 343 in 50 overs a victory is normally a formality. When England's batsmen rattled up this total yesterday, the bowlers must've thought a containment only a containment effort would be neccessary. Yet another player pressed a claim for promotion to the senior series versus Bangladesh. This time it was Ian Bell, who scored a one day career best of 158 off just 143 balls. He shared century stands for the second and third wickets before falling fourth at 306. Inevitably the lower order went after the bowling with similar eagerness, but slightly less efficacy. Chris Woakes was run out off the final ball as the Lions reached their total with the loss of 8 wickets. No massively explosive mainstay performances from the Indi

  • T20 Australia Vs Pakistan St Johns Wood Road, London Middlesex England

    Published: 6th July 2010

In the world of crash! bang! wallop! cricket, the Pakistanis have come up trumps again. Despite England's recent victory in the T20 final, it seems that teams from the subcontinent still excel at reaching the boundary rope with regularity. Normally it's captain Afridi who is sending a shower of cricket balls onto spectators. This time, however it was Umar Akmal's turn. In front of a partisan Birmingham crowd, Akmal clubbed a ferocious 64 off just 31 balls. With brisk support from Kamran Akmal and Shoaib Malik, The Pakistanis notched up 167-8 in their 20 overs. Shaun Tait was the only bowler who escaped unscathed, his 2-25, whilst the likes of Johnson and Tait were pinged around with disdain in comparison. Umar Akmal sounds like

  • Meanwhile.. Bopara fills his boots for England A St Johns Wood Road, London Middlesex England

    Published: 5th July 2010

After being once touted as the Next Big Thing, Ravi Bopara has fallen out of Test contention and now plies his trade for the England Lions. On Sunday, the Lions met West Indies A at New Road, posting a massive total of 345 all out in 49.1 overs. Test regulars Ian Bell and Jon Trott were both out for one, it was Bopara with able support from all round Peter Trego who kept the scorers busy. It's been a while since an England batsmen posted a massive one day score, normally we're on the receiving end, and Bopara's knock of 168 off 140 balls was his highest in the shorter form of the game. He scored his three centuries against the West Indies in 2009, and the twenty-three boundaries and two sixes struck must've been equally satisfying.

  • 5th ODI - The Aussies finish strongly.. St Johns Wood Road, London Middlesex England

    Published: 4th July 2010

And some people were expecting 5-0 England, were they? Australia comfortably won by 42 runs at Lords, but England edged the Natwest Series 3-2. The likes of Hussey, Marsh and even the tail contributed a stonking 130 in the final 11 overs to set England an imposing total. of 277-7. Stuart Broad chipped in with 4-64 off 10 overs, whilst Graeme Swann took 3 wickets at a slightly more respectable four per over. The rest of the England attack frankly got taken to the cleaners, James Anderson surpassed his previous effort in conceeding 75 off his sixty balls. England lost early wickets and did not recover. Paul Collingwood top scoring with 95 with able support from Bresnan and Swann, but once again the failures of the Big Guns meant En

  • 4th ODI Australian Cricket Logo- The Oval: Normal Service is Resumed.. St Johns Wood Road, London Middlesex England

    Published: 1st July 2010

It took a whilem but the Aussies (finally) dish out a beating in the fourth ODI at the oval yesterday. After nearing six and over in making 290-5, they skittled out England for just 212, winning handsomely by 78 runs. Underestimate this Australian side at your peril, captain and vice-captain both led from the front with knocks of 92 and 99 not out (so close!) respectively. James Anderson reverted back to his 'boundary fodder' output, the upper order getting stuck in to the tune of 1-66 in his ten overs. Lots of starts amongst the England batsmen including a brisk 57 from Michael Yardy, before the Australian quicks cleaned up the tail: Ryan Harris finished with 5-32 and Doug Bollinger provided champagne support (ho ho) with 2-38. 3-1 w

  • At least we're good at ONE team sport St Johns Wood Road, London Middlesex England

    Published: 29th June 2010

As one set of 'lions' prove to be toothless and lame, another prove their bite to be a little more deadly.. So what was the fuss about the Australian cricket team? After stuffing them in the T20 final, England now take an assailable 3-0 lead in the NatWest series. The 'England' team (I use the term loosely) struggled past Australia in the third one day international at Old Trafford yesterday. After holding the fearsome likes of Paine, Hopes and Bollinger to a modest 212 all out in 46 overs. England sweaked home with one wicket and just five balls to spare. Our disparate bunch of cricketers seems to have collared another South African to add to their collection. Craig Kieswetter has suddenly burst onto the scene this summer an

  • The Laws of Cricket St Johns Wood Road, London Middlesex England

    Published: 25th June 2010

An oldie, but a goldie.. You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out. When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side thats been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out. When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay all out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been

  • The home of Cricket St Johns Wood Road, London Middlesex England

    Published: 23rd June 2010

Lord's Cricket Ground (generally known as Lord's) is a cricket venue in St John's Wood, London. Named after its founder, Thomas Lord, it is owned by Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) and is the home of Middlesex County Cricket Club, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), the European Cricket Council (ECC) and, until August 2005, the International Cricket Council (ICC). Lord's is widely referred to as the "home of cricket" and is home to the world's oldest sporting museum. Lord's today is not on its original site, being the third of three grounds that Lord established between 1787 and 1814. His first ground, now referred to as Lord's Old Ground, was where Dorset Square now stands. His second ground, Lord's Middle Ground, was use
