  • South African planting at... Highbury Place, London Middlesex England

    Published: 19th July 2010

Last week I mentioned the South African themed planting around the war memorial at the start of Highbury Place. Here it is a picture of it taken this morning - yes it's another beautiful day in London.

  • The memorial on... Highbury Place, London Middlesex England

    Published: 16th July 2010

The war memorial which dominates the beginning of Highbury Place commemorates not the First World War, but the Boer War - the bloody South African conflict ended some 11 years before the Great War began. Nearly 100 Islington residents lost their lives in that conflict and the memorial is witness to their sacrifice. Since last year, the small garden that surrounds the memorial have included with grasses and plants with a specifically South African theme including euphorbia, African lilies, and red hot pokers, native to South Africa. The sculpture itself was designed by the Australian, Bertram Mackennal an artist most famous for designing the coinage and stamps bearing the likeness of George V.

  • Historic... Highbury Place, London Middlesex England

    Published: 15th July 2010

"The houses that occupy Highbury Place were designed and built by the London property speculator John Spiller. When they were completed in 1777, he moved into No. 39. Little had changed sixty later when the artist C.H. Matthews made this drawing." Taken from The Excellent Museum of London's entry on Highbury Place, see http://www.museumoflondon.org.uk/postcodes/places/N5.html Over the weeks, we'll add more on the history of this lovely street.

  • Get away from... Highbury Place, London Middlesex England

    Published: 14th July 2010

No entry yesterday, as we were up with the lark as we rushed to see family in Hastings. At one end of Highbury Place is Highbury and Islington tube station, one stop on the Victoria line from Kings Cross and the new St Pancras International. St Pancras is one of the most beautiful stations in the world (they call it a "destination station"). It is also where you pick up the Euorstar train to Paris. We used the fast line to get down to Ashford on our way to Hastings - a distinct improvement on the older lines from Victoria or Charing Cross. The picture above comes from www.stpancras.com

  • Our neighbours on... Highbury Place, London Middlesex England

    Published: 12th July 2010

Highbury Place is mainly a residential street, but quite a lot of work gets done here too. Take our neighbours at number three. Sarah runs a thriving osteopathy practice (invaluable when Sally did her back in!).   We aim to diagnose and treat your problems fast and efficiently whilst at the same time dedicating ourselves to delivering a high standard of care to all our patients.  As osteopaths we work towards exceeding the high standards required of us by the Code of Practice laid down by the General Osteopathic Council. We use a wide range of techniques, gentle and effective and individually applied to each patient according to their needs and preferences. They say: "We aim to diagnose and treat your problems fast and effi

  • It's Sunday at... Highbury Place, London Middlesex England

    Published: 11th July 2010

One huge pleasure of living on Highbury Place is to step out of the door early on Sunday Morning and go for a run round the fields. This morning was beautiful - just a scattering of people, including the odd celeb (Clive Anderson walking his dogs), the occasional fellow jogger, and the excellent park keepers clearing up after the evening before. In nice weather like this, the Fields are a magnate for sun-seekers and picnickers; on a sunny evening it gets quite packed. And so another mellow day in Highbury begins.

  • A flat for sale on... Highbury Place, London Middlesex England

    Published: 9th July 2010

Highbury Place is a distinguished Georgian terrace. Originally, it would have been a series of large houses but over the years many of the buildings have been converted to flats. Interesting, the trend now seems to be to convert them back to, grand houses once again. But every now and again, one of the flats comes up for sale. They are usually priced at a premium – they have a great location and overlook the greenery of Highbury Fields (Islington’s biggest public park). This one bedroom,  top floor flat is on the market now for £415,000... Details here: http://www.hotblackdesiato.co.uk/property.aspx?PropertyID=106854&View=List&showHeader=false

  • Our holiday let at... Highbury Place, London Middlesex England

    Published: 8th July 2010

The great thing about this superb apartment let for holidays and short stays is its location. Built in 1774, it is adjacent to the buzz of one of London’s “destination streets” (Upper Street), one minute from the underground (Victoria line), and on Highbury Fields, which London's colourful mayor, Boris Johnson calls 'the jewel of our borough, positively bursting with artistic and cultural delights' and where he plans to make good his new year's resolution to lose a stone. The apartment's proximity to the underground and its excellent connections, makes it the perfect place to come home to. Part of an historic Grade II listed terraced house, it has recently (February 2010) been completely re-decorated, and is moderni

  • Junior Apprentice was here Highbury Place, London Middlesex England

    Published: 7th July 2010

Before the show disappears into the midst of time, let us not forget that Highbury Place provided the house that was home for BBC's young apprentices (you know, the kids who get fired by Sir, now Lord Alan Sugar.  Richard Osley, deputy editor of the Camden New Journal picks up on the fact in his blog: http://richardosley.wordpress.com/2010/05/21/junior-apprentices-woz-ere/ and if you do a bit of googling you'll find other references and the exact address. In future entries, some of the other famous residents of this beautiful street...

  • The pool's still there Highbury Place, London Middlesex England

    Published: 6th July 2010

Came across this picture on the web the other day (at the English Heritage site, www.heritageexplorer.org.uk - it is their copyright). It shows the old lido on Highbury Fields which backed onto Highbury Place. Now the pool has been covered over. It is still a nice feature of living here but what fun the outdoor lido must have been. And what a wonderfully evocative sixties image. © English Heritage.NMR
