Day 3 Round-up Wimbledon

Published: 24th June 2010

While all eyes were on the record-breaking John Isner-Nicolas Mahut battle on Court 18, Dutchman Thiemo De Bakker and Colombian Santiago Giraldo were staging their own marathon encounter - a first round match held-over from Tuesday - that lasted deep into a fifth set.

Ironically, or perhaps appropriately, the prize for the winner was a second round date with either Isner or Mahut and it was De Bakker who eventually triumphed with a 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-3, 5-7, 16-14 success.

Another player who had to dig deep on Wednesday was Austrian 16th seed Jurgen Melzer (above), a recent French Open semi-finalist. The left-hander looked down and out when he trailed Serbia's Viktor Troicki by two sets to love in their round two meeting, only to pull out a 6-7 (5-7), 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 victory.

Twenty-ninth-seeded German Philipp Kohlschreiber left it late when he was stretched into a fifth set by Russian Teimuraz Gabashvili but finally emerged with a 7-6 (8-6), 5-7, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 9-7.

And another highly ranked player only survived by the skin of their teeth when Spain's 28th seed Albert Montanes scrapped his way past American Brendan Evans 3-6, 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 6-4.

No such problems for 12th-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych, though, who continued the good form he has been enjoying all year when he outplayed Germany's Benjamin Becker 7-5, 6-3, 6-4.

Another two seeds kept the dream alive when 22nd seed Feliciano Lopez eased past Lithuanian qualifier Ricardas Berankis 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 and 31st seed Victor Hanescu moved through to round three with a 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over Turkey's Marsel Ilhan.

One of the in-form players on grass leading up to the Championships, Queen's runner-up Mardy Fish, surprisingly crashed out 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 to Germany's Florian Mayer

In the women's event American teenager Melanie Oudin, who last year was awarded "Tour newcomer of the year", failed to live up to her 33rd seed billing when she was well beaten by 23-year-old Jarmila Groth in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.

Otherwise it was a good day for the seeds, particularly the Russians, with Maria Kirilenko, Vera Zvonareva and Nadia Petrova all going through.
