Day 1 Men's Round Up

Published: 22nd June 2010

As is traditional on the opening day of the Championships, the top half of the men's draw took centre stage and there were some high quality first round encounters to entertain the fans packed inside the All England Club.

No.11 seed Marin Cilic was the biggest casualty in the men's draw, decisively beaten by Germany's Florian Mayer in straight sets 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1). The 26-year-old German is ranked 47 places behind the Croat, but outclassed his 21-year-old opponent.

At 4-4 in the third set, and facing three break points, Cilic staged a mini recovery, saving all three with some gritty play. Having refocused, the Croat forced a tie-break but the 11th seed's attention-span was short-lived, as the German grabbed an immediate mini-break and raced away with the set and the match.

A different Mayer, Argentina's Leonardo, was less successful, beaten by the No.21 seed, Gael Monfils, 6-1, 7-6 (11-9), 6-2. The Frenchman made short shrift of the Argentine, romping away with the first set in just 15 minutes with an impressive 100% success rate on his first serve, but made hard work of a 50-minute second set, where the two 23-year-olds were more evenly matched.

Once Monfils had the second set, taking it 11-9 on a tie-break, he picked up the pace again in the third, needing just one of the three match points he'd built up on Mayer's serve. The contest lasted just 91 minutes, during which time Monfils slammed down a bountiful 21 aces.

Even more bountiful on the aces front, with 25, was American Mardy Fish, who raced past Australian 17-year-old Bernard Tomic 6-3, 7-6 (10-8), 6-2. Fish had enjoyed a fantastic AEGON Championships in the run-up to Wimbledon when he lost to Sam Querrey in the Queen's Club final.

Jesse Levine, also from the USA, was less successful against Spain's Feliciano Lopez, the Spanish left-hander coming through 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Lopez was in good form, having earlier this month put out Rafael Nadal at Queen's.

Fellow Spaniard, Tommy Robredo, couldn't follow Lopez into round two, however, when he went down 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2, 7-5 to Australia's Peter Luczak.

Elsewhere, 12th seed Tomas Berdych started with a mini Federer-style wobble during his victory over Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan, though still won in straight sets 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, 6-2.

The Czech started slowly, suddenly finding himself 5-3 adrift before storming through the remainder of the first set and thereafter the match.
