  • MOTORWAY MADNESS ? M62, Warrington Lancashire England

    Published: 27th June 2010

Motorway madness? If it wasn't for a couple of rampant rams and the toss of a coin, the history of the M62 could've been very different! We've been taking a look back at the origins of West Yorkshire's very own 'mountain motorway'...and found some startling facts! It's probably hard to believe as you zip along the M62 in air conditioned comfort that this road didn't even exist so very long ago! But, just four decades back there was very little here besides sheep, moorland and more sheep. Plenty of sheep! It was going to be quite some task to join the White Rose and Red Rose counties together with landscape like this contend with, but work began in earnest in 1966 to build this historic link. Before that, though, was the i

  • Priest Walks The M62. M62, Warrington Lancashire England

    Published: 24th June 2010

Priest walks length of the M62   ALTHOUGH motorway anoraks may enjoy fruitful hours in the service station cafe discussing facts about the M62, those of us with interests outside the realms of tarmac and blue signs are unlikely to have given the route much thought. As one of the busiest roads in Britain, with around 100,000 cars passing through some sections each day, it is hardly a place that inspires a pleasant two-hour drive, let alone a two-month walk. But that was exactly what Rev John Davies had in mind when he decided to trek the entire 107 miles from Hull to Liverpool. During his unusual journey, the 45-year-old vicar, of Good Shepherd Church in West Derby, which serves the people of Norris Green and Croxteth, walked throu

  • Area M62, The Truth Is Out There! M62, Warrington Lancashire England

    Published: 24th June 2010

UFO hunting in Area M62 Think UFO-watcher and the image that often springs to mind is a jobless, unshaven man with lank greasy hair. He will also have body odour that could fell an ox at 50 paces, and all the social airs and graces of a cripplingly shy librarian. But here, at a slightly down-at-heel Pontefract hotel just off the M62 in my native Yorkshire, that image is well and truly shattered. There are company directors, secretaries, policemen and building society managers all gathered in this mock-Tudor function room for Britain’s UFOlogists’ annual shindig. This is, truly, a close encounter of a Yorkshire kind – and these people certainly know their alien onions. Secret Ministry of Defence documents were relea

  • ENGLAND'S ONLY COAS-TO-COAST MOTORWAY. M62, Warrington Lancashire England

    Published: 23rd June 2010

In the Thirties, planners imagined a magnificent road linking Liverpool to Hull. But the dream soured, as Joe Moran discovered   "Why don't we cross the city limit/And head on down the end of 62?" The Liverpool group, It's Immaterial, posed this question on "Driving Away From Home", a haunting road song that was a hit in the summer I sat my O-levels. The chorus warmly recommends driving along the M62 for "30 miles or more" (which seems like a long way when you're 16 and your family doesn't own a car). Twenty years on, driving along England's only coast-to-coast motorway no longer seems like an alluring alternative to exam revision. When the Queen officially op
