An emergency gate is being installed in the central barrier of the M25 on the Kent/Surrey border.
The gate can be used in the aftermath of a serious incident when all lanes have been closed, to release queuing traffic on the opposite carriageway.
Use of the gate will be supervised by Highways Agency traffic officers or the emergency services.
The gate, which is the fifth to be installed on the M25, is between junctions five and six.
Highways Agency project manager Clive Cooper said: "The gate will relieve congestion and improve safety, allowing our traffic officers and the police to efficiently disperse queuing vehicles."
