The Origins of the M25, Grays Essex England
Published: 13th July 2010
The Origins The planning and construction of ring roads around London in the era of the mechanically propelled vehicles began in 1911 following recommendations of the Royal Commission on London Traffic 1905. Amongst other proposals the Commission recommended a circular road around London the route of which very similar to what we today call the North and South Circular Roads. In evidence to the Commission Mr. R W Perks MP recommended a circular road further out (12 miles from Charing Cross) to be built to a width of 250 feet and with a total length of 75 miles. In the absence of a suitable local authority the Board of Trade Traffic Branch took charge of the construction of arterial roads in the London area under the supervision of i

M25 Racer M25, Grays Essex England
Published: 12th July 2010
M25 Racer - PC Game: Renowned for congestion and tailbacks, the M25 might not seem the most obvious venue for a racing game. M25 Racer does what it says on the box though, enabling you to illegally race around sections of Britain's favourite motorway. And there's more. London and Oxford both feature heavily, as does the route between them. Developed by Dutch outfit Davilex, their unique impression of England appears to have been gleaned from an episode of The New Avengers, the game being littered with rolling hills, red phone boxes and Range Rover police cars. The obligatory Stonehenge makes a token appearance, although druids will be upset to learn that it has been relocated to the Home Counties. As for the racing, it's a fairly unr

Batman on M25, Grays Essex England
Published: 3rd July 2010
This was one of the stranger news articles refering to the M25 last year.... A Fathers For Justice campaigner could be jailed for up to seven years after causing a 55 mile traffic jam when he climbed a motorway gantry on the M25 dressed as Batman. Police were forced to cone off the entire London Orbital when Geoffrey Hibbert scaled an overhead sign and unfurled banners in protest of his treatment by the family courts on August 15 last year. He stayed there for eight hours at junction 14 near Hillingdon, West London, causing tailbacks stretching up to 55 miles. Despite claiming his actions were not dangerous and were part of a legitimate right to protest, a jury took just 10 minutes to unanimously convict the 49-year-old of causi

Roadworks threaten M25 traffic jams for three years M25, Grays Essex England
Published: 3rd July 2010
The delays caused by the scheme to widen the country's busiest motorway are expected to affect more than 200 million journeys. Peak time traffic is expected to slow to a crawl across a stretch of the country from Buckinghamshire to Essex during the works which will run until just before the 2012 Olympic Games. The majority of the northern half of the motorway, which is already the busiest road in Europe, will be affected, with the morning rush hour expected to double in length. The AA warned drivers to "grit their teeth" while the RAC predicted "1,000 days of jams". However, both organisations insisted that the project, which will create up to 5,000 jobs, was necessary to avoid even worse congestion in the future. Part of a

Parking demo transforms M25 M25, Grays Essex England
Published: 30th June 2010
A mile-and-a-half stretch of the M25 became a car-free zone on Saturday as nearly 2000 riders demonstrated over London motorcycle parking charges. The demo did a complete 117-mile circuit of the motorway at 45mph as police closed junctions to keep cars out. Warren Djanogly, chairman of campaign group No to the Bike Parking Tax, said: “It was fantastic. There were over 1700 people. It took eight minutes for everyone to pass a camera filming the ride on the M25. The procession was a mile-and-a-half long. “I went to bed with the rumble of engines in my ears.” Read more in this Wednesday’s MCN.

The Dartford - Thurrock River Crossing, Dartford River Crossing (DRC) (or simply the Dartford Crossing) is a major road crossing of the River Thames in England, connecting Dartford in the south to Thurrock in the north, via two road tunnels and the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge. It opened in stages, the west tunnel in 1963, the east tunnel in 1980, and the bridge in 1991. Until the opening of the bridge, built to the east of the two tunnels, the crossing was known as the Dartford Tunnel. Cobham M25 services plan will cause disruption M25, Grays Essex England
Published: 28th June 2010
CONSTRUCTION details for the motorway service station on land near Cobham have been approved despite fears it could lead to months of disruption for people living nearby. Shouts of ‘this is a stitch-up’ and ‘it’s a real disgrace’ were heard from the public gallery as Elmbridge Councillors approved the plans during a four-hour meeting on Wednesday evening. Councillors for Cobham and Downside, John Butcher and Dorothy Mitchell fought to have the plans thrown out but they were outnumbered by councillors who followed officers’ recommendations to approve them. Developer Swayfields has already secured permission to build the service station near junction 10 of the M25, which will include a petrol station, ho

An emergency gate is being installed in the central barrier of the M25 on the Kent/Surrey border. The gate can be used in the aftermath of a serious incident when all lanes have been closed, to release queuing traffic on the opposite carriageway. Use of the gate will be supervised by Highways Agency traffic officers or the emergency services. The gate, which is the fifth to be installed on the M25, is between junctions five and six. Highways Agency project manager Clive Cooper said: "The gate will relieve congestion and improve safety, allowing our traffic officers and the police to efficiently disperse queuing vehicles."

Amazon Review Iain Sinclair - London Orbital - A walk around the M25, Grays Essex England
Published: 24th June 2010
Amazon.co.uk Review One might be forgiven for thinking that the only thing more boring than spending a year walking around the M25 would be reading a large book about walking around the M25. Yet Iain Sinclair's London Orbital is a fascinating and curiously haunting read. Part of the reason is that Sinclair brings to the project an immense literary talent, an intense and lifelong interest in the history of London and some extremely interesting travelling companions. The walk was taken in several stages, from Waltham Abbey to Shenley, Abbots Langley to Staines, Staines to Epsom and Epsom to Westerham before going on to Dartford, the river and Carfax and arriving back at Waltham Abbey. Each stage fills a chapter and the reader is advised to

Speed Cameras M25, Grays Essex England
Published: 23rd June 2010
The number of drivers fined for speeding on the M25 is set to soar after the launch of new cameras. Old film cameras on the western section near Heathrow have been replaced with digital models that - unlike the old film cameras - are capable of catching thousands of speeding motorists a minute. "It's been well known for years that drivers were unlikely to be caught here unless they were well over the limit," said AA president Edmund King. "But all this seems likely to change now." A Highways Agency spokesman said: "We are currently upgrading the cameras on the M25 between junction 10 and junction 16."

History M25, Grays Essex England
Published: 21st June 2010
At 117 miles, the M25 or London Orbital Motorway is the longest city bypass in the world. Its radius varies from 13 to 22 miles from Charing Cross. Most London roads are managed by Transport for London but as part of England's strategic road network, the M25 is managed by the Highways Agency. A Royal Commission first suggested a ring road for London in 1905 but only parts of the planned road were created at that time. By the 1970s, the huge growth of motor traffic had led to firm Government plans for what became the M25. The last 13 miles from Micklefield to South Mimms opened ahead of schedule in October 1986 by then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
